It's been almost 4 years since I started consulting on Ruby and Rails performance. Thanks to every conference, every reader, every subscriber, and every client that I've had along the way. I've learned so much and I hope to keep serving all of you in the future.

Was really hoping to last until the rumored 13/14" MBP refresh but maybe I won't make it 😑

I'm starting to wonder if maybe the wireless chip on my MBP is just fried. I seem to be having issues with bluetooth/Wifi connectivity constantly dropping when no one else really does...

I'm booking corporate training for Q2/Q3/Q4 of this year now. If you'd like me to come by your office and teach your team how to write fast Rails apps, let's do it!

Amazing how ignorant this comment is, when the same slide deck shows that about half of funding for indie SaaS comes from the founders and friends/family

ActiveSupport's ?/? adds additional uncertainty on what type an object is. If it's clear that an object can either be a truthy object (array, string, number) or nil, then just use `if object`. It's shorter and increases confidence.

You can also watch a lot of developers “spend thousands in a vain attempt to save hundreds” just by putting a usage-based price tag on something. (It doesn’t even have to be denominated in money; we’ll golf any available metric.)

Just learned about the Micromort. "A microprobability is a one-in-a million chance of some event; thus a micromort is the microprobability of death." Stay away from base jumping. But helicopters are fine.

Fun fact: we call ethernet cables "patch" cables because they were invented by a Mr. Ethernet Patch in 1947. His buddies called him Eet for short.

So I know bluetooth is the future and everything, but my bluetooth headphones CONSTANTLY drop out in RF-heavy environments, like this WeWork I'm in right now.

Part of the reason I continue to invest in Ruby is that no one ever says "I stopped using Ruby because it wasn't very productive/expressive/fun". No one is switching to <insert meme language of the moment here> because it's "more" of one of those things.

I used ruby on rails for the first time yesterday and it was the most amazing "new" web thing I'd tried in a long time

. has beenn playing with TracePoint and applying it to debugging, which makes sense when you realize, as he puts it, debugging is: "Build the Expected Execution Path; Build the Actual Execution Path; Compare"

I think it's close/would be possible to fix a lot of this with a little bit of sugar, but it's not there yet.

Forking is definitely not easy enough, socially and technically, in the current OSS paradigm. Package managers enforce this as well, by encouraging a single, top-level namespace (e.g. your gemfile says `puma`, not `puma/puma` or `shopify/puma`).
