Excited that this work by and collaborators in CSIRO including is out. We showed introgression of an insecticide resistance gene from an invasive into a native crop pest

Big thanks to for pointing out this recent paper to me which shows why ABBA-BABA tests may be misleading if the groups have very different population sizes:

Extremely excited to share the first major project from our lab, led by the brilliant with major contributions from Mateo Garcia, Mackenzie Keegan, , , , Manfred Schartl, and other co-authors:

Happy to share our latest preprint using genomics, museum collections, & pop gen modeling to examine convergent evolution of seasonal camouflage in response to reduced snow cover across the snowshoe hare range.

New preprint, on how *aggregate* recombination modulates: (a) variance in the genetic relatedness of relatives; (b) how rapidly selection purges introgressed DNA. Turns out (a) and (b) are... related! w/ 1/2

A big 👎 "When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds..." 1/2

Pretty amazing, but “[we] suggest the following general model of animal evolution. A population spreads over the land, adapts to various conditions through mutations, and diversifies into several species.” sounds kind of familiar... 🤔

Controversies in can linger for centuries. But a new study is helping bring one such controversy to a close by demonstrating the importance of in the diversification of Heliconius butterflies. ($)

Exchange of genetic material among species played a major role in the wide of Heliconius butterflies, according to a new Science study, results of which inform a centuries-long debate about the value of hybridization to species evolution. ($)

Our work on island evolution in deer mice is out! We find that island mice are much larger and less aggressive, but while body size is heritable, reduced aggression is likely a plastic response - to high pop density on islands? w/

On a personal note, I’m really excited that I got to work on part of this with my little brother who spent a Thanksgiving a few years ago teaching me how to code! Enjoy! 5/5

We combined this method with our de novo assemblies to show that most discordant topologies in the genome arose through introgression, and to identify a convergent, introgressed inversion that captures a color pattern gene! 4/

Consistent with insights from and others, we found a strong correlation between gene tree topology and recombination. We developed a new method, QuIBL, to distinguish ILS from introgression on a per-locus basis–check it out! 3/

A few takeaways: This project was only possible due to an international collaboration in the community. We made de novo genome assemblies to probe evolutionary relationships in the distant past, and found widespread evidence of gene flow 2/
