Can amateur science be good for the soul, as is amateur art? When we speak of science as a disposition, the "scientific method" comes up. But maybe there's more. What about the disposition to sit with patience and gentleness and examine the thing? Science as love.

I like that idea. Both science and art are creative endeavors in which observations are synthesized into something new. The primary difference being that science provides insight into the world around us, while art looks inwards.
