It is impossible for us to see the world through their eyes. Our speculations will never come close enough to their reality. Same goes for neolithic, bronze age, etc.

But this doesn't mean we shouldn't study them, but rather that we should always acknowledge our limitations. Leroi-Gourhan opens his classic monography on prehistoric religion saying "this is going to be a novel based on ~2000 archaeological finds, but the best one yet".
