Not sure what you mean by "the norm". It was certainly discouraged in the high middle ages. Though not during the roman empire and republic.

>high middle age I have no knowledge of the era whatsoever. And of course "the norm" only applies to aristocratic society. I can however assure you that it is, in this sense, "the norm" from 12th century Provence through 13th-18th Italy to 14th-19th France.
