These Gegenic monsters neuter the masculine and set it within its bounds until the next generation asserts its primacy (again, urged by Eros) over new Gegenic monsters.

One could very well read the Peloponnesian war on this level: Autochthonus, sea-controlling, schizophrenic Athenians, whose monstrous tentacles wrap across the Aegean vs hyper-masculine, Heraclean, paranoid Spartans. In the end, Sparta wears the conquered Athenian pelt.
