The remarkable thing is not that the Roman Empire fell, but that it held together for so longhttps://twitter.com/adrastosomissi/status/991971515116728320 …

A beautiful map of travel times from #Ancient #Rome, made by the Stanford ORBIS project. Very pretty and a nice reminder of the basic fact that Rome was able to rule its Empire because - and only because - of the Mediterranean. pic.twitter.com/XV3IJoQPbM

Gibbon briefly discusses this in book VI if I'm not mistaken, but if the subject is of interest to you, check out Clifford Ando's Imperial Ideology and Provincial Loyalty in the Roman Empire.

A Swiss roman history prof. told me the Rheno-Danubian limes had been occupied by a frontier force affirming itself as Roman deep into the 9th century, I can't find anything on this, but it could be a clue as to how belonging to the empire was a deeply internalized feeling.

That’s extraordinary. Believable though; I mean, if it was strong enough to make Greeks still even today think of themselves as “Rhomious” and of Greekness as “Rhomiosini”, then it must’ve been a very powerful feeling indeed.

For Ando it relied on the imperial cult which mobilized local aristocracies abroad and locally & made it in their best interest to defend the roman empire in their communities. Thus it became a religious and political feeling imbedded even in imperial & extremely local politics.

I’ve read that except for a few exceptions, most of the barbarians wanted not to overthrow Rome but more to be cut in on this civilization deal. A piece of the action, as it were.
