Stendhal thought the Cavalier Bernin responsible for what he termed "the decadence of Italian sculpture" - one sees where he's coming from: his David is vulgar and the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi a crime, but some of his works breathe true life, and great talent if not genius.

Bernini's David is one of the best sculptures of David because of the determination on his face, and the perfection of his body posture indicating the effort of his task. He evokes emotion and the story is told in rare form as he is about to fight Goliath before he wins or loses.pic.twitter.com/lknmnyxQDd

Michaelangelo's is a Greek symbolically enlarged marvel, and yet he looks like he is waiting to prance on a lewd catwalk. Donatello's bronze talent can't quell the shudder in my spine at the 12 year old fashion plate catamite David who looks like he couldn't swat a fly.

I'd agree with your opinion on Michelangelo's. But I feel Bernini had to resort to the facial expression to clearly convey what an artist of genius could express with posture. I'd say David is an incredibly complex subject to work with, and Bernini, like others, failed at it.

Why would you want a dead face when you are fighting for you life???? That would look like a bored vaccuous model is posing for something, his body was positioned by a dress maker or photographer, but the face is dead and empty and void of meaning or symbolism????

To seek the calm apollonian poise, the sureness of excellence, when strife and tension resolve in the free-floating equilibrium of the moment: the very second when, free and weightless, the athlete releases the javelin from his hand.
