I greatly respect Rorty as a crusader against philosophical overreach & delusion. For this reason, I take his final reflection on his life seriously, especially his wish that he'd spent more time reading poetry:https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/articles/68949/the-fire-of-life …

Would that we had the time to read everything in existence- but we do not. The more I have read, the more I know how little I will ever be able to read. I choose books now more carefully, as if I were choosing provisions for a journey upon which I can never turn back.

So many lauded books- invisible to me. Additional weights, luggages, without utility. I'd rather carry Dante, Gospels, Shakespeare, Melville, Poe- than clamber up a mountainside- "philosophy" in tow.

The fact that you consider western philosophy as "books" in their physicality tells a lot about your understanding not only of philosophy or literature, but also of culture in general, as a commodity.

They're indeed physical entities for you, entities to be readily purchased and converted into social capital. But Plato is a bit more than Wordsworth Classics editions of the Republic and if you can't see that you're already dead.
