Are you speaking exclusively, or even just primarily, about the contemporary realist novel?

Ah, ok. Agreed, more or less. The only 20th/21st century fiction I really like is either fantastical, even 'genre' stuff like Bakker/Ballard, or the modernist-derived tradition, so I find the persistence of moralistic divorce/adoption/affair/inheritance novels bizarre.

Still, I think it's partly just a question of social circumstances. People enjoy seeing themselves reflected in books, film, art, etc. So long as the middle class still exists, we'll have the middle class novel.
