They add a notion of brightness to color... which is not necessarily present in Homer & archaic poets.

Was there an obvious direction or trend of shift? Such as from more literal/visual properties to more interior ones?

From what I gathered from a particular Jstor article... Plato introduced a rationalization of color as a continuum ranging from black to white, color as a single unit of brightness, not hue.
