Xenophon's Hiero, despite its subtitle "On Tyranny", is a reflection on love & its power. Hiero knows the people who openly praise him whisper horrors in private. From the freest men comes the sweetest praise. Slaves cannot love.

Like Racine's Nero, he has absolute power but cannot make others love him; he acquired power for the love & respect it entailed, only to reap wild hatred. The absurdity of his condition has not escaped his notice: "The best a tyrant could do," he mutters, "is to hang himself".
