A word like "Rome" immediately invokes a throng of images, smells, & memories which allows us to conceptualize it as a reality. That is to say, with Marrou, that historical knowledge relies on an unconscious reconstruction of the past as a fantasized present.

This poem, much like André Chénier's entire oeuvre, seems a characteristic example of how western consciousness has imbued Antiquity with a Christian otherworldliness, or perhaps something else, I don't know, like the fantasized yonder that Ireland was to the Matter of Britain.
