Avaton (pronounced Áh-vah-ton) is Greek for "what may not be set foot upon." Etymology: Negatory a-, vat-, root of verb meaning to walk or go, and -on, gender-neutral nominative suffix.

Interestingly, the Ancient Greek version is ἄδυτον, aduton, "to sink, to immerge oneself" with privative a, and is used to describe a part of the pagan temple, whereas abaton is used for churches.
