Salutation gestures typically bare the wrist with its radial and ulnar arteries. Insulting or obscene gestures typically present the back of the hand and arm, which is more defensible. Can anyone think of counter-examples?

Most gang signs present the back of the hand, right?

Indeed. I find a counter-example in the Greek mountza, which is effectively jazz hands: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moutza

Given the predominance of empty-hand gestures signifying goodwill in other cultures however this is a slightly surprising one, and it appears that it has evolved from a blessing, which would explain it

The same can be said of the mano cornuto, which sometimes signifies 'You are a cuckold' in modern Latin countries, but originally warded away evil and is still more or less used that way (albeit possibly from the perspective of the Other Team) in heavy metal

The metal gesture presents the back of the hand whereas the mano cornuto presents the palm.
