The sudden unveiling of nature & vast empty spaces which is produced by driving, elicits an immediate, almost religious emotional reaction. Man was not built for such high speeds; hitherto they were solely for the gods. This effect is the driving force behind On the Road.

One could actually go further and add that the religious and cultural ideas put forth in On the Road are almost entirely indebted to driving and highways; I remember feeling overwhelmed by the sudden appearance of a landscape and thinking "all this is holy, and one".
