The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili has an allegory of two statues standing upon tombs. The first, a male made of black stone, with eyes & teeth of silver, has a crown & a sceptre. The inscription reads "I would be naked, had the beast not clothed me; search, you shall find; leave me."pic.twitter.com/mcs2N3XVZs

The second is a crowned female pointing behind her. The inscription reads "Whoever you are, take from this treasure as it please you. But I ask that you take the head and leave the body." The narrator then mentions feeling a "sacred horror" and leaving the place.

Both statues are in the head of an giant elephant, which supports an obelisk. On the elephant, an inscription reads "CEREBRUM EST IN CAPITE" & "πόνος καὶ εὐφυία" - "The brain is in the head" & "Labour & Genius". Two eternal lamps burn by the statues.

Although I suspect the allegory is centered on the Timaeus, I am unable to understand it. Since Twitter is turning more & more into a Renaissance Neoplatonician Academy, I thought I'd ask if anyone had some idea about what the two statues & the elephant could mean.

This is well beyond anything I can usefully contribute to, but is the substance of the female statue described?

The two statues are described as exactly the same in material & even in posture, save for the arm pointing behind on the second statue.

Per the depiction, is the male's staff pointed towards the female? Could πόνος and εὐφυία be what the statues are allegorizing respectively? What if we translated the second to "take the head, but don't touch the body", i.e. take the essence of the head not its container?

I think πόνος here stands for the alchemical work, ie. the chemical processes the alchemist takes care of, and εὐφυία the inner processes of purification of the alchemist... the two statues could depict the Red King and the White Queen... I'm puzzled.
