Yes, in primitive music the rhythm is intoxicating, the listener is absorbed by the 'spectacle' of the passage of time. Contrast this with Bach who attempts to pull higher forms from out of the sea of pulsation, almost manic desire to signify something *beyond* music
I have attempted, in the fifth movement of my Divertimento for winds in C, to write deeply rhythmic counterpoint.
