The language is a mix of Italian, Latin, and Ancient Greek. I am using the 1546 French translation which leaves both the Latin & Greek untranslated & keeps the original MS's layout. Although the translation must not be as accurate as a modern one, the experience must be closer.

It is not undeservedly that this work has been considered the hardest work of literature ever created. Without a solid understanding of classical culture, ancient languages, [neo]platonism, alchemy, and renaissance culture, one would be absolutely lost.

So far, the work seems to announce a framework wherein the protagonist experiences a mystic initiation through love. The rhythm of the work seems to be that of the four stages of the Magnum Opus. It all takes place in the underworld - a dream within a dream.
