The essence of rhythm is the affirmation of will over time. Music, thus, is not a "copy" of will, as Schopenhauer thought, but one of its most direct affirmations.pic.twitter.com/DsMHVgXkGj

As we tend to absolute rhythmicity, we also tend to absolute abstraction; hence music being the most abstract art. More rhythm implies less figuration, and thus, it leads us to indifferentiation, to the sea of becoming.
The essence of plasticity is the affirmation of will over matter. Sculpture, thus, appears to us as the removal of some matter from the process of becoming. Its existence as artwork is a stasis.pic.twitter.com/J7qqNEDOTI
As we tend to absolute plasticity, we also tend to absolute figuration; the asymptote stretches on forever, as absolute representation is, simply, the real. More figuration implies less rhythm, more stasis; and thus, it leads to death, to the sun of Apollo.pic.twitter.com/VlvTpEvI3J
Architecture is the most rhythmic of the plastic arts, and thus the most abstract. These two characteristics seem to depend on each other, as architecture does not signify anything other than its own inner rhythm.pic.twitter.com/frPR4eREwT
So-called "abstract" painting is only "abstract" inasmuch as it represents the introduction of rhythmic behavior in painting, nothing else.pic.twitter.com/quzIKx81wt
To perform a rhythmic art, is to will the passing of time; to create plastic art, is to will eternity.pic.twitter.com/1DBy6P63eY
Music is not the closest copy of will; the truth is, art & the universe are two similar creations of will representing itself, in the rhythmic sea becoming & the static sun of Apollo. The most difficult attribute to manifest in a medium is the one that lies opposite on the continuum. The greatest sculptures are marked by a sense of rhythm arising out of stasis, and the greatest music is that which attempts to plasticize the immaterial
Wouldn't you say that this is exactly what makes counterpoint so interesting, that is to say, the almost architectural organization of sound?
Yes, in primitive music the rhythm is intoxicating, the listener is absorbed by the 'spectacle' of the passage of time. Contrast this with Bach who attempts to pull higher forms from out of the sea of pulsation, almost manic desire to signify something *beyond* music
I have attempted, in the fifth movement of my Divertimento for winds in C, to write deeply rhythmic counterpoint. There's almost no melody, it's only rhythm & the texture of counterpoint. https://soundcloud.com/ulysse-bouchard/divertimento-en-ut-1 … It starts at 23:13 (should have put more silence between movements)
Where would photography figure? Maybe it's not an art?
I don't think it's an art. I'm not sure about cinema, need to think more on it. But I only wanted to engage with the seven classical arts, for now. And in their pure form, mostly.
