It has been said that this mysticism of power can be traced back to Sicily. Dionysius the Elder, condottiere, then king & man of letters, has been considered an origin of this. I believe the origin is indeed sicilian, but earlier than Dionysius.

The Greeks saw victory, especially military and political, as coming from the gods. This was not as a primitive understanding of causality. Victory was felt as the theophany of Grace.

For the Greeks, victory signified that the spark of divinity that resided in every man was much larger in the victor. The Olympic games were a strictly religious event. Excellence was a religious phenomenon.
