You forgot, as you taught the history of times of decadence, that there still were summers. As a collective memory, our idea of vast historical eras never retains more than one or two precise images : there was mist, and little sun, in the Middle Ages.
I'm not saying there was any mist, I'm saying the mental images of the common man almost always include mist and lack of sunlight.
