The iconic Earthrise image, captured during the Apollo 8 mission, reveals the Earth peeking out from beyond the lunar surface as the first crewed spacecraft circumnavigated the Moon. Artemis continues to build on the legacy of Apollo for all humanity. #EarthDay
In this image from the Apollo 8 mission, Earth is floating in the distance against the blackness of space as the gray lunar surface dominates the lower portion of the image. The Earth appears as a blue orb swirling with white clouds. The lower half of the Earth is cast in shadow. The surface of the Moon is gray and textured with craters. Credit: NASA
In this image from the first day of the Artemis I mission, the white metallic exterior of the Orion spacecraft flies in the foreground as Earth floats in the background against the blackness of space. Thrusters dot one surface of the spacecraft and a solar array juts toward the center of the image. This image was captured by a camera on the tip of one of Orion’s solar arrays when the spacecraft was 57,000 miles (91,732 km) from Earth. Credit: NASA
