Good god. Talk about threading the needle. How brief is the occultation @SOFIAtelescope will observe? #askNASA

-
The occultation will be appox. 2 seconds, but we are using our high-speed camera.
-
Wow that's longer than I expected. Not that I had a good idea. What percentage of MU69 velocity is line-of-sight?
-
It's a small percentage. Most of the motion is from the Earth's orbit around the sun.

Is there any data from the recent observations of MU69 that will be followed up on? If yes, which ones?
#AskNASA -
Yes the same
@NASANewHorizons team that studied June 3 occultation is onboard & using that & new@NASAHubble data to plan tonight's observ.

What type of data (UV, IR, etc.) will you be collecting on MU69? Will you be collecting spectra, as well?
#AskNASA -
We're using our visible light camera in high speed for these observations.

I've always wondered if drag is an issue when the telescope door is open on SOFIA, how do you work with that?
-
No, we engineered the aircraft so that the air flows smoothly over the openingpic.twitter.com/TIbMncFrs0

Very cool!

How do you deal with turbulence?
-
The telescope is mounted on a spherical bearing to isolate it from the movement of the aircraft. We also use gyroscopes.pic.twitter.com/KRjmckqrts

How do you determine the location to fly over for observing? And how specific do you need to be?
#askNASA -
We used data from
@NASAHubble &@ESAGaia satellite to calculate where MU69 shadow would fall on Earth. The best data is from the center! -
Thanks! Also, MU69 is pretty small, what is the telescope's observing limit? (As in size, distance, etc.)

#AskNASA Maybe its too late to ask but how did it go? Any idea of how close you got to the center of the shadow? PS: Keep up the good work! -
Everything went very well! We were exactly where the predicted center of shadow was at exactly the right time!
-
Very very happy to hear that. Looking forward to read about the results!
