NYC startup idea: build cheap trailers that host parklets / bike storage / etc. that millennials can park in front of their apartments to choke cars out of their neighborhoods. RT if you would pool a few $/mo with your non-car-owning neighbors for a new outdoor living room. 🤑

New York Life trolling Classics Twitter about agapē. In the second half, they’ll have a follow-up commercial about eudaemonia, where they’ll say “It means ‘happiness’” and three people at every university in the country will lose their minds.

I’m at the Olympic Stadium and there is a break for a VAR check. It’s going on for a while, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to jot down a few thoughts about VAR.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could at least kind of understand a computer?

It should not be a “left” or “right” argument as to whether California is a failed state.

Historic preservation, in practice, is not about preserving history. It is about preserving the lifestyle of an affluent urban elite.

I'm now at the point in life where I've seen enough proprietary software shut down that it's one of the biggest reasons I prefer open source In other words, I've become a digital prepper

It is literally insane that we can reduce the average American’s carbon emissions by 65% by getting them to live like New Yorkers, but intellectuals’s preferred solution is large scale population control.

A quiz I've asked in a dozen in-person conversations: "What is the change in CO2 output by the US since the year 2000?" Everyone gets it wrong, and doesn't even get the sign right. Fracking has made a natural gas boom that displaced coal, and we're down 14%.

Different cultures just choose different points on the ketchup-mayo Pareto front

You think you can do better than the H. J. Heinz Company, with their thousands of scientists who've perfected food? You're wrong. Ketchup and Mayonnaise are the greatest condiments known to mankind. Yes, mayo. You like mayo, even if you think you don't.

Every provincial thinks they're unique and special because they have their own special sauce, be it Fritessaus or Utah Fry Sauce or whatever, and when you dig in its always some linear combination of mayo, sugar, and ketchup. Mayo and Ketchup are global flavor maxima.

I have come across a series of interpretations of famous figures as they would look today. Here’s Julius Caesar looking like he enjoys a flat white and works as a senior manager in Google

Is there a sane semantics to extend SQL to support negative relations? For instance, unioning a relation with its negation seems to be clean in resulting in an empty set. But what about joins? Asking, uh, for a friend.

This is great. New York and many other cities still plan for cycling as if the people who ride bikes are a monolithic group, all with the same ability. I'd love to see facilities designed that prioritize the "vulnerable cyclist" above all others.

From 2013 to 2017, Tokyo built many houses as the whole of England. House prices in Tokyo are now 9% *lower* than they were in 2000, while in London they are 144% higher, adjusted for inflation.

McDonalds is also worth a visit since it's a barometer of whether the local area has any good food at all. In places with crap food, McDonalds just serves the same US menu. And in other places, they have to innovate hard with McAloo Tikkis to have a chance in the local market.

I feel like this is very apt (from ) going from a country of laws => a country of executive regulatory agencies

The Bill is for the law that school buses must stop at railroad crossings. In the song, the Bill becomes a law; in reality, such a bill has never been approved by the United States Congress, but an equivalent regulation was codified by the United States Department of Transportation at 49 C.F.R. 392.10.
