Acting as if white male terrorist groups are somehow just a different flavor of a Muslim terrorists - in this framework being presented as the "original terrorists" or the main brand that others are riffing off - is how soft Islamophobia works.

If you can't see examples of terrorism - i.e. the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims - in the enslavement of Africans and Native genocide in the Americas, then ask yourself why that is.

US-based militias who have not only plotted but enacted violence in the Americas and especially against civilians in the United States predate ISIS. If you can't draw those straight lines to US history from this moment, what kind of understanding of white supremacy do you have?

If the term "ISIS" accurately captures their brutality and causes an immediate, unequivocal reaction when you hear it but "white militia" or "white supremacist" doesn't conjure up the same disgust or horror, ask yourself why. What narrative is not taught widely enough then?

If you want to look at further ways liberal anti-Muslim bias shows up, you can find my article on the term Soft Islamophobia published in

This narrative around "terrorist = Muslim" has direct links to vigilante hate crimes; discrimination when traveling (ex.
#FlyingWhileMuslim) or banking; & other systematic policies of indefinite detention, the Muslim Ban, and millions of civilians killed in the "War on Terror."Näytä tämä ketju -
So, no, this is not some quip that's coming at the expense of white people. It's ahistorical instead. It's like when people joke about the "US Taliban" infringing on women's rights here as if Christian men weren't doing that in their own unique way before the US was even founded.

This narrative of forever having to link "terrorism" and "Muslimness" and not being able to talk about terrorism (or national security & fighting terrorism) without making Muslim references - by both Republicans & Democrats - is dangerous and harmful to real people.

P.S. Before people (usually white non-Muslim men) start trying to explain Islamophobia or humor more "objectively" or "rationally" to me, maybe do some self-reflection as to how easily/often "not all men..." or "I'm not racist!" comes to your lips but Muslims are "too sensitive."

Because, conveniently, what terms like Vanilla ISIS do is shift the mental association from "white male militia" to "brown male militia" instead of to white supremacy. And if you're someone who isn't disavowing white supremacy on the regular, you may not be reflecting on it much.

People act like terrorism is something that only happens abroad as if vigilante hate crimes & state-sponsored executions of Black & brown people aren't happening domestically weekly. Some of us experience this country w/caution every time we go outside. Nothing foreign about it.
