I remind them to 1. Focus on themselves and what they're (not) doing first and foremost. Avoid the navel-gazing of intellectually ranting about how much more racist people in your community are when there are things in your own life that you have the ability to change.

Second thing: 2. Look to start an intergenerational dialogue with them. Where did you get your education on white supremacy? Have they had similar opportunities? Approach this as an educational opportunity to ask how they got to this point. There's unlearning & learning to do.

Context is important. 3. Do not engage in xenophobia to get your point across. Recognize internalized xenophobia if you're coming from a place of fury against those "backwards foreigners." If you exercise more patience for white people than your own elders, there's a problem.

The big picture is 4: White supremacy impacts all of us, just in unique ways. Instead of getting into paternalistic narratives around anti-Blackness, help expand their self-interest so they recognize why they have to fight white supremacy. Our liberation is "bound up together."

To help with your emotions: 5. White supremacy feeds us these narratives. It is intentionally designed to pit people of color against one another within communities & across racial and ethnic lines. Your anger is with this system & patterns. Work with the person, against systems.

6. Recognize that there have always been South Asians who have aligned with white supremacy and colonialism and caste-based oppression and other systems. Our people are not apolitical. Harness that power when possible. Accept when you need to stop investing in their "education."

Reminder that 8. We will each spend our lifetimes learning & challenging white supremacy. This is not a one time convo. For those aunties and uncles that can be moved, keep working on it. They can and will put money and votes toward causes - invest in them as they invest in you.

Lastly, for now, 9. Expand the convo from one around challenging anti-Blackness to one of unpacking white supremacy. They - and you - need to understand how aspirational whiteness, colonialism, xenophobia, and anti-Blackness all tie in together. South Asian histories are crucial.
