There are over 11,000 paid informants in the United States who have been tasked with surveilling Muslim community spaces, especially the mosque. [Short thread re: those pics of police posted in front of US mosques today.]

Many mosques - especially Black mosques - already have effective community-based security models in place. For those Muslims who are figuring this out now, decision-makers need to be much more mindful of what they are doing when they call in US police to provide security.

For those in Muslim communities who are undocumented; who are Black, Latinx, and Native and Muslim; who have outstanding warrants due to the criminalization of poverty, mosque and community leadership have to be MUCH more mindful of turning to US police for "our" safety.

We need community-centered defense in the face of vigilante white supremacy. In our rush to say that Islam is the "religion of peace," may we not forget that we have specific examples of how to line up security during times of prayer in our own faith. We have needed it before.

White nationalism ties in with policing - internally & around narratives about policing, lack of accountability, etc. Militarization of domestic police forces ties in with foreign policy choices and violence committed against Muslim communities and communities of color abroad.

As a lawyer, I promise you: a reasonable suspicion of police is not some wildly unpatriotic action, no matter what trolls & pundits may say. Do not talk to police without a lawyer. "Nothing to hide" shouldn't mean "come on in." Americans fought for civil liberties. Honor that.
