Curiously worded ad(?) for Ubuntu Pro in the "apt upgrade" output: "Get more security updates through Ubuntu Pro" I assume this doesn't mean they're withholding security updates for non-paying users. But... what do they mean? 🤔

All of these are EOL? So if you need them and want them without security issues you need to pay. A lot of software vendors do that I think? On Linux you can at least always self compile.

Then you need to pick a different distro that does give you security updates..

Not really an argument. If we follow down this line we end up with RHEL 6 which has paid extended lifecycle support right now, but no free rebuilds that provide the same. Now what?

So it's a usecase for Ubuntu Pro's service that starts extended backports at 5 years, but not for RHEL which starts those at 10 years (compared to free rebuilds). At how many years do you draw the line then? Seems pretty arbitrary
And is only relevant if you absolutely need to stay on an old Ubuntu or app version. Just staying on top of LTS is enough for most users to never have to think about that.
