The more I look into the history of executable formats for Windows and the various compatibility layers throughout the years, the more shocked I am that any binary can run at all.

What I have so far just to make some sense of the genesis. This is purely for executable formats leading up to PE without any intermediate linking or container formats. Am I missing anything?
