Also don't forget that they're the #1 reason Secure Boot adoption on Linux is terrible. You either self-sign your nvidia drivers and have a SB trusted key's pk just sitting on your disk (which violates the whole security model) or disable secure boot. They're an enemy of security

Isn't just the db key and certificate enough for a kernel module?

normally yes, but due to licensing binaries of the nvidia module cannot be distributed, so it's a DKMS.
