Today is, ironically, the anniversary of my father’s death. I had a VERY complicated and frustrating relationship with him once I became an adult and could see his behavior through adult eyes. I made a kind of peace with the father he was, for my own sake... (con’t)

... but I don’t know if I’d call it forgiveness. And that was because he didn’t want to actually work through anything, just gloss over it. It’s not on you, as the child, to carry your parent’s emotional weight, no matter what it is, just bc they’re your parents.

And I’m actually lowkey offended at OP’s “especially fathers” in the midst of this
#girldad moment. Nah. You don’t get to skip out on all the building up of a human being you signed on for, and then step back in to get some of the light when you had no parts in this.Prikaži ovu nit -
Thank you for mentioning this, bc this saying got completely twisted over time. Literally your blood oaths - the bonds you chose - are thicker than the bond by relation. https://twitter.com/malevelynt_art/status/1224080636480192512?s=21 …https://twitter.com/malevelynt_art/status/1224080636480192512 …

Soooo many people replying since yesterday arguing how important forgiveness is. Y’all forgiveness is not a magic spell. You don’t just say “I forgive” and it actually be so. Some ppl *can* let go of anger without forgiving behavior. https://twitter.com/naima/status/1224026412648148992?s=21 …https://twitter.com/naima/status/1224026412648148992 …

Telling people over an over again how they need to just forgive in order to move on is the emotional version of telling your kids to hug that relative they don’t wanna hug. Now ppl who can’t forgive have guilt on top of everything else they feel, or they say it but don’t mean it.

We’ve oversimplified the act of forgiveness, as we have so many other components of healing, processing and growing from trauma. My counter is to argue that you need to know what YOU need, bc it may be your own self you have to extend grace to, no one else.

You should as you tell the reason why you should "You owe yourself peace of mind"
#Forgivness is that....most folk dont & carry that resentment forever both of my parents was addicted to drugs, 25yrs fostercare & adopted the oldest of 3 if I didn't forgive them where would I be -
I was able to let go of my anger without forgiving the behavior that caused it. There is geniuinely no blanket solution for everyone, and forgiveness isn’t something you can just will yourself to do.

No one said you have to. They said try to.
