I wrote about the death of my friend Arman Soldin today for Tagesspiegel, but as the piece is in German here's the text in English.
Rest easy, brother.
One year ago today, American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was shot & killed by Israeli troops while wearing press credentials and reporting in the West Bank. I stand with those demanding justice and accountability for her death.
1/ Remembering Shireen Abu Akleh
On this day last year the world woke up to the dreadful news that renowned Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh had been killed by an Israeli sniper.
Shireen had been wearing a PRESS vest and was clearly recognisable as a journalist.

today (right of pic). A brave and tenacious journalist + a helluva friend. I’ll never forget driving into Ukraine with him on the 2nd day of the invasion. My thoughts are with his family and those he inspired along his way 🙏 He was one of a kind.
I only met Arman a few times but he was always such a generous and complimentary colleague. Ya haram. A good man, and such a kind presence in the usually lousy world of war zones.
Arman was the kind of guy who saved hurt hedgehogs in war zones. He was an incredible and vibrant personality and a great journalist. We miss him. We are mourning him. Rest in peace twitter.com/ArmanSoldin/st…

"A British official had called him to say he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind." How do these people sleep at night?

he feels caught in limbo — like so much about Transnistria, itself literally an in-between place.
“In Transnistria? We can’t say who we are,” he said. “It’s not a country.”

Glad this tweet has over a million views. The world should see the tone-deaf and inhumane responses of embassies that evacuated all their staff from #Sudan.
People are not asking for your help. They are rightfully demanding their passports to flee a war. How is this not a crime?
Dear Wasila, we deeply regret the current situation you're in. We were forced to close the embassy and evacuate our staff. Unfortunately, this means we can't get to your passport. We advise to apply for a new passport with your local authorities.
Given UK response to #Sudan, am reading more about the Ukraine Family Scheme, launched 5 days after the start of that war.
Today is day 15 of Sudan war.
👉🏽“Family” included anyone, even in grandparent-in-laws

In Ukraine, Wagner’s cadres — whose ranks include prison recruits — stand accused of horrific abuses against their foes, and sometimes against their own fighters.

Where are all the Christian Republicans on this? Pompeo? Pence? Huckabee? Pretty sure they’d be speaking out loudly if it was anyone other than the Israelis repressing Christian worshippers abroad.
Very concerning developments in Sudan’s Khartoum as clashes break out between the RSF paramilitary and the Sudanese Army.
People are taking shelter inside the international airport.
I just arrived late last night in Khartoum and woke up to the deeply disturbing sounds of gunfire and fighting. I am currently sheltering in place with the Embassy team, as Sudanese throughout Khartoum and elsewhere are doing. (1/2)
