That said, I think accelerating technological progress & a need for more intentional thinking about the future means that sci-fi’s “objective value” has increased. The best sci-fi gives you a visceral sense of what the consequences of tech will be, long-term.

So most normies should read more sci-fi, and most nerds should read more literary fiction. At the margin.

To be clear, I think the optimal reading strategy is a mix of both; neurotic, self-aware people can capture subtle things on the page that sci-fi writers can’t, and vice versa.

(It also seems true — based on living in Brooklyn for awhile — that sci-fi is mostly written *by* competent people, and literary fiction is mostly by neurotic people, and that this accounts for the difference.)

Have really been enjoying “Ra” lately (https://qntm.org/ra ) — I bought the $3 Kindle edition — and am planning to tackle Vernor Vinge next.

I’ve mostly gone back to reading sci-fi nowadays. I suspect this is because sci-fi is about competent people, whereas literary fiction is about neurotic people.

Often think about this Kafka fragment. “finally it can be calculated in advance, and it becomes part of this ceremony”pic.twitter.com/aRoNvHfokr

I *want* to be pro-UBI, but my main worry is: Housing construction is the bottleneck on the US economy, so most of the money will just end up going into landlords' pockets, & nobody will end up actually being better off. Is this a valid argument?

It's a nice illustration of how technology & engineering are often the barrier to scientific advances. In this case better engineering leads to more data which leads eventually to more knowledge. (This seems to be Ed Boyden's entire career thesis.)

1986 tech: use a diamond knife to shave tissue off the worm & color pencils to trace the neuron paths. 2020 tech: ion beam scanning microscopy, recurrent neural networks, 3D image data pipelines, etc. (Details -- https://www.hhmi.org/news/unveiling-the-biggest-and-most-detailed-map-of-the-fly-brain-yet?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_content=100001108363269&utm_campaign=hhmi-campaign …)

I think it's real too. It emerges out of pretty much every personality factorization I've seen; even MBTI manages to get that one right.

I think you can also see this in kids; some react super negatively to these sorts of stimuli, and some love it. It seems to be “hard wired” quite early on. Anyone done a lit review on this one?

Trying to explain to extroverts (e.g. at a large Thanksgiving) why I just need to hide in my room and wear headphones for a few hours, I realize there’s just an enormous gap between our experience and they’ll never quite get it.
