They offered for folks to quit now and take advanced severance. “If your new years resolution was to quit the company, let me help you.” It takes bravery to do that, but it means everyone knows the folks around them are in for the journey ahead.

They lost three employees. It gave them a chance to be positive about the transition, for their friends to root for what was next for them instead of worried who was next. Then the team gets to congeal back together and move on.

At Spark we’ve said goodbye to some dear friends over the years who I still love. I’m reminded of that as they comment on today’s announcements and cheer on their former colleagues. They are off on their own adventures, and I’m rooting for all the Spark alumni.

Change is hard. I’ve seen founders get very fear based & possessive about their team during moments of change. But an “alumni mentality” is what you want. If it’s not fitting, sometimes you can fix it, but sometimes it is time to move on and celebrate the time you had together.
