Oral arguments are happening today at the LA state 1st Circuit appellate court in Vote v. Louisiana - a case that will determine whether more than 71,000 people in #Louisiana on probation and parole are being unconstitutionally denied their right to #vote.

#Louisiana has the US’s highest incarceration rate. From arrest to incarceration, Black Louisianans are disproportionately represented at EVERY level of the state’s criminal justice system.
Because of Louisiana’s mass incarceration system, Black people, who account for 32% of the state population, make up 63% of individuals who have lost their #VotingRights through the state’s disenfranchisement law.
At issue in the lawsuit heard before the 1st Circuit state appellate court today, is a group of those disenfranchised, disproportionately Black individuals, on parole and probation and seeking to be full citizens in their respective communities.
Felony disenfranchisement laws prevent the very people who are likely to be the most knowledgeable about injustices in the criminal justice system from voting for representatives of their choice who have the power to respond to those injustices.
Nationally, six million Americans are barred from #voting due to a current or past felony conviction. The vast majority are living in their respective communities, yet are still treated as ‘second class citizens’ due to this denial of their fundamental right.
Voting is a hallmark of citizenship.
