    1. [A long thread about an ARP for ] For decades, Renfrew residents have asked when we would have our own Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP). The North Hill Local Growth Plan is our chance to have our say.

Yes to all of this (re CBC young adult article). Appeal is not just jobs, it’s how we live, work, and play in community. It’s how we commute, how we shop, how we recreate. If we want a young and vibrant city we have to be brave enough to embrace a new urban form that supports it.

Modern urban planning has scarred us. Change should be good. But, a century of bad change has taught us otherwise.

    6. Currently we prevent incremental adaptation and create stagnant, frozen neighbourhoods that are more likely to decay because they can't become more productive (see these parts of 's book). We can use the Guidebook to change that.

    5. Calgary needs to sort out heritage and the Established Growth and Change Strategy. To get the pieces in order, I'd suggest giving the Guidebook first reading until heritage and EAGCS report. Then we'll know we're ready to change systems and avoid becoming Toronto or Vancouver.

    4. What could Calgary look like instead? Housing types that are compatible in scale with detached single-family homes. Here are some twentieth century examples from Renfrew. Some are pretty. Some are not. All are houses. Like detached homes.

    3. This map, though not exactly the same, shows where Calgary allows only detached houses. The orange shows where anyone can replace a house with a bigger house without any questions. To build anything else, they'd need Council approval.

    2. This map shows where Toronto allows residential and where it allows townhouses/rowhouses, which is the kind of market-rate larger family-friendly housing options that CMHC is encouraging.

    1. Recently, CMHC called out Toronto for not having enough larger family-friendly row houses. I see the Guidebook for Great Communities as a chance to keep Calgary from becoming like Toronto and Vancouver that are mainly detached homes and towers.

Did you know that fire trucks, snow plows, and other maintenance equipment come in sizes other than humongous? It's true!

Congregations in traditional neighbourhoods "were more balanced ... in the short term, and [had] much better conditions for positive rejuvenation in the long term." In other words, a variety of housing options lets congregants "dwell beside" the church and near each other. 3/3

Without a mix of housing and people, congregations (like communities) "seem to inevitably collapse on themselves within a 20-30 year life cycle, because there is little to no opportunity for [them] to regenerate – the homogeneous housing stock doesn’t allow for it." 2/3

.'s point that "'parish' descends from the Greek paroikia for 'dwell beside'” reminds me of this five year-old piece about how geographically-defined congregations benefit from traditional neighbourhood development and missing middle housing. 1/3

What stands out on this infographic? One (of numerous things) is that a tiny CA (!) was successful in acquiring a grant for a community driven solar generation project. All because of committed volunteers (especially ). Awesome work and

Olmsted designed Mount Royal, Scarboro, and the "CPR Addition to Bridgeland." Only the latter, now part of Renfrew, is allowed to adapt. Do they retain their character as upper, middle, and working class? What can we learn about Calgary's planning history?

This map is pretty handy for showing 's generational clusters/divisions.
