Clicking through, it doesn't limit to specific technologies - and text uses different examples than graphic - it says they scan the FLOSS stack in use, and any project can register?

They do highlight the popular kids, as would i in their position. Someone with a bigger CPAN rev-deps footprint than I have should try it and let us know. (@genehack is a bit busy at the moment, so not him.)

(The module i'm supporting has few enough users that their likely answer of not having heard of it wouldn't tell us if they'[re scanning for Perl modules or not.)

No. If they wanted to service the open source community, this would've been organized as a non-profit. If they had any other business model, I might not be so skeptical, but their business model is donating to open source on behalf of others, and they want to do it for a profit.

They're not calling it 'donating', they're calling it pay-for-service (ala gig economy). Red Hat model but without W-2 for things too spread out to be pulled into a Red hat, rather than Linux Foundation model.

We may prefer the Foundation model, but the firms with the $$ to pay prefer a support-and-license-warranty-subscription model. If this works -- big if -- it could be a good thing. OTOH it has a very good chance of crashing and burning.

Having spent over a decade at a $F500 firm in FLOSS-Governance circles (alas past tense), i see their subscription model as rather more salable to my ex-mgt than Perl Foundation donations or ActiveState subscriptions.

(I seriously considered requisitioning AS Perl sub$cription for multiple platforms, but they didn't build the DBD::* modules that were my only pain point.)

From Big IT view (and even SMBs), their one-stop shopping for support and license warranty for all the FLOSS that isn't supported by Red Hat or Canonical is a very plausible business plan. Needs to be truly one-stop to win. (So they need to include us too.)

regarding the "big if" -- Tide has to know that if Tide skims too much for themselves & their investors, the FLOSS "Lifters" will balk&walk, which in turn would ruin Tide's subscriber pitch,so greed should be self-limiting?
