Over the past 2 years I've watched many of my friends become slightly more disillusioned all at the same time. At first I thought the cause was politics or Covid. But after thinking harder I realized that we are all entering middle age (most of us are 36-42 years old).
I think in middle age people start questioning whether the goals they strived for in the 20s/30s have actually resulted in their happiness. This seems like a very healthy exercise but it does make people a little more grumpy/pessimistic than they used to be.
I'm sure a ton has been written on the subject. If anyone has any good book/blog post recommendations - please reply to the thread with links.
Its funny to me how something that is so common still takes people by surprise (it certainly took me by surprise). But such is life.

1/2 I am (to my surprise - how am I that old) in that exact age range. 37. I've noticed a general shift towards more, I would call it "mindfulness". But not in my close group of (male) friends, but rather in society.
2/2 While at the same time I've noticed a significant increase in "conspiracy theories" believers in my close (male) group of friends. It varies from simple to crazy stuff. I'm a bit scared about how this development is going to go forward. These folks are highly educated ppl.

At least for me, it’s more of a bifurcation. Many are the happiest I’ve ever seen; they’ve either achieved their 20-something goals or found other things that make them even happier (eg. having kids) Others, exactly as you describe; with few in the middle
I always wonder how much survivorship bias plays a part in anecdotes like this.
