Writers! While working on my book, I want to play test a better UI to ask readers for feedback on my drafts. If you have opinions or wishes, and would like to weigh in or beta-test, please DM me! Some preview of what I’m building:pic.twitter.com/xEGwmBm4mJ

How do you select a bit of text to append a note? Regular old highlighting?

Yeah, possibly on desktop. Highlighting on mobile is a pain, so either two taps (one to open menu, one to add note where you are), or some mode where you draw a freeform selection with a finger, and then a text field appears on release. /cc @scottjenson

I wonder if on desktop, it could just be “click anywhere and start typing.” (Attached is the current UI when you click on any word.) There could be a small field that expands with a first keystroke (I don’t think people like starting to type without seeing a cursor).pic.twitter.com/5D2M22UXvv

I think I am just going to try to avoid selections in general. They are so messy (especially on mobile). I wonder if it’s possible to get feedback if people just tap on the beginning or end of a paragraph to establish context.

Interesting. I see two types of feedback: general comments on the chapter (as you've laid out here) What you've laid out looks great. The second is just confusing sentences/paragraphs (which requires highlights) Depends on what you're after

Started on something similar for the magazine’s slush pile. Didn’t get very far but avoiding selection on mobile is paramount. Tap sentence/paragraph to add comment/reaction on the go. Offline use is the next most important thing. Will keep an eye on this!

Yeah, I was thinking of offline, too. Would be so nice. Needs to prefetch content + store the feedback locally (which it should anyway) and upload whenever connection is restored.
