I feel that just like it’s easier to see changes in people we don’t see very often – rather than in people we hang out with all the time – stateful machines or software used infrequently can involuntarily portion our lives into arbitrary chapters.https://twitter.com/halkyardo/status/996131392655413249 …

Another: I rarely use Twitter DMs, so old messages accumulate, including one from a dear friend who passed away years ago: “I don’t understand Twitter. What is it there for?” It remains in my inbox, both in memory of him, and as a reminder of the absurdity of this online world.

Every time my friends and I play Nintendo WiiU/Wii/3DS games we see a lot of our old Mii avatars. Some are 10 years old and of a time. Amongst them is a friend who passed away a few years back. It's always so good to see him. It's as if he's still playing the games with us. 😢

iTunes, whose tired, behemoth-like UI carries the weight not just of every Apple music endeavour starting with the first iPod, but even the souls of abandoned iOS apps.https://twitter.com/warpling/status/996174034101514242?s=21 …

The iTunes sync page shows a grid of shiny candied apps (some a decade old!) that no longer exist on the store but have somehow remained stored on my computer, waiting to be synced back to an OS that will no longer support them.

My Gmail Drafts is half blank pages created by mistake, and half really hard emails that I never could get quite right. Sometimes a draft is just the name of a friend next to a past date, and that’s enough to remember what was it meant to be about.https://twitter.com/blackjohnm/status/996333029659377664 …

Gmail Drafts, if you're an introvert or procrastinator. Pages of things you wanted to say, often in reply to someone, but couldn't finish or didn't have the courage to send. (Gmail is unique here bc draft saving is silent/automatic; you don't get a prompt when leaving it undone.)

Whenever I open Gmail I see the last message that my late wife sent me via Google chat in 2014. It’s her standard “pssst” greeting for me: “aye aye”. I leave it unread lest it disappears.

To remember where I parked my car in underground parking, I take a picture of it in context to its surroundings. I now have over 100 pictures in an album which are just my car in different lots, some evoking significant memories, others lost to time...

A friend of mine requested FB to delete her account if she died, so they did. They also wiped every message she sent. If I open the conversation now it's 8 years of me and blank spaces. Including the message she sent shortly before taking her own life. I don't think that's right.

As long as we’re going technical, for me it’s git branch names – filling up with abandoned projects and explorations, made harder to recognize by the fact that my branch names are sometimes vague words like “test” or “whatever”.https://twitter.com/adrianholovaty/status/996268542365487104 …

A bit geekier, but the ~/.ssh/known_hosts file, listing servers you've accessed. Former jobs, old projects I helped friends with, old hostnames for stuff on my local network.

Is this names of branches you hadn't finished with, or is there a way to see the names of deleted branches?

Not sure about the latter. I barely understand git. I rarely delete my (local) branches.
