No, in a centered website with a wrapper div to keep it a certain width, the left and right "whitespace" is variable. 1/

In the old days, if your menu was made of graphics instead of HTML text, you'd need to swap out the open and closed states. An old technique was to preload them, but keep them "off canvas" and just swap position with CSS. Closed state would be x = -9999px or something.
