iirc, it clips to "onscreen" elements until you start scrolling, at which point the offscreen bits suddenly pop into view.

i think if an element is partially <0, it's rendered if scrollTop != 0. if it's totally <0, not entirely sure

Alas, I couldn’t get anything that’s positioned < 0 to render, ever. (But I did not exhaust all the positioning options.)
