In a few minutes, I was able to find dozens of examples, many officially listed as Chrome Experiments on the official
@ExpWithGoogle site. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=840866#c10 …pic.twitter.com/ODe3Ud5SFo

Among the countless projects now broken in Chrome: Pink Trombone, Infinite Jukebox, Shadertoy, Paper Planes, Gridland, Typedrummer, Coming Out Simulator 2014, Do Not Touch, Jazzari, George and Jonathan, and Real Estate's interactive Stained Glass video. https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=840866#c21 …pic.twitter.com/ZgGyyvU1Th

Look, we all want to stop the scourge of autoplaying ads/video, but requiring every game developer and creative coder to patch their old code is a half-assed way to solve it, and it makes the web worse. This simple proposal makes so, so much more sense. https://www.construct.net/blogs/ashleys-blog-2/how-browsers-should-handle-autoplay-restrictions-954 …pic.twitter.com/iHn6dfZJ4C

That proposal is exactly what we’ve learned the hard way and implemented in Pac-Man on Google homepage. That was in 2010.

I remember the debacle, but not how it behaved. Can you elaborate?

We autoplayed the game with sound on (via Flash then) after a bunch of seconds idling on the homepage. This caused issues – particularly when a CoolPreviews plugin quietly loaded Google into a hidden iframe, but otherwise we realized we were too aggressive…

…so we changed it so that we still autoplayed, but now with sound off unless there was an interaction with a game. And we added a visible sound off/on toggle.

What do you think of Ashley’s proposal? Seems pretty rational to me, but obviously, I don’t know the complexities the Chromium team is facing.

I liked it! It made sense to me. Sorry, that was the point I was trying to make. Should try to write less when tired. :·/
