Idk if there are reasons relating to the physical machine, but in a monospace typeface drawing small glyphs larger will help them fit more comfortably on the shared advance width, and to make the space around them less gappy.

Definitely I saw some typewriters moving them closer to the left side to make dots feel better as sentence enders (and worse as everything else).
