Wait, I’m not sure I follow this. I read the thread and benefited a lot from it. But I also found myself curious about the history of that word’s hurtfulness, and I have never used it before nor intend to. Is that bad? I feel knowing that context could make me more empathetic?

I will never come down on the side of less linguistic research -- but asking a marginalized person to do the work of explaining something to you when your goal is to feel better rather than learn is Not Good. Heading to usage manuals or reading more on your own:
