The coins themselves show which year they were released. In this case you’re right, 50 and 100 were designed and released the same year.
It’s fascinating to see an evolving system like this.
It’s also interesting to imagine if they should actually make 50/100 different by design (even if put together the same year) to make the entire system coherent in its inconsistency?
Since they have so many coins, the sizes and presence of holes actually help the elderly/vision impaired. Japanese culture is one that stresses elderly care and you can definitely see that there.
