@robinrendle @jasonsantamaria @craigmod @djrrb Do you know anyone who automates/scripts InDesign well? Is there a more modern way to do print automation? I’d like to learn and share.
In my experiences, InDesign scripting has been beyond painful:https://medium.com/@mwichary/name-badges-the-unsung-conference-heroes-db6fa0925c5b …

And for our conference (http://creativeproweek.com ) we use InDesign’s Data Merge to do our attendee badges, with variable data, 2-sided, for the past few years. No scripting required. Did you try that? There’s a lynda course on ithttps://www.lynda.com/InDesign-tutorials/InDesign-Insider-Training-Data-Merge-Database-Publishing/143323-2.html …

Thanks! I used Data Merge as a starting point and then scripted it to make it “smarter.” It worked, but it wasn’t fun. :·/ Looking at it, it feels that InDesign scripting has been abandoned by its creators a decade or more ago. Was curious if there were more modern alternatives.

I don’t have anything of use to add here, but I’m enjoying following along. I’ve only done very light scripting with ID, so this is very interesting.

I think I might be inching into a Marcin-sized market, so I understand why Adobe might not care. It’s just disappointing the same way lackluster Mac OS GUI automation is. Also, I already miss loving InDesign. :·(

(As I often do, I guess, I tried to add craft to automation, for example by having the script smartly resize/reposition badge elements based on text length. Or having Data Merge show/hide graphic elements, which it normally doesn’t support.

Or detecting the font coverage failing, since InDesign doesn’t have a font fallback stack. The goal was to have each badge feel like it was designed by hand. :·) )
