@robinrendle @jasonsantamaria @craigmod @djrrb Do you know anyone who automates/scripts InDesign well? Is there a more modern way to do print automation? I’d like to learn and share.
In my experiences, InDesign scripting has been beyond painful:https://medium.com/@mwichary/name-badges-the-unsung-conference-heroes-db6fa0925c5b …

(As I often do, I guess, I tried to add craft to automation, for example by having the script smartly resize/reposition badge elements based on text length. Or having Data Merge show/hide graphic elements, which it normally doesn’t support.

Or detecting the font coverage failing, since InDesign doesn’t have a font fallback stack. The goal was to have each badge feel like it was designed by hand. :·) )

One solution might be just to do it in a browser. Create 8-up print layout using CSS Grid and media=print, resize the names using a text-fitting jQuery library like FitText.js. Alternately, like
@cssdevconf's tags, use a condensed font and make last names much smaller... -
CSS is interesting. Someone else suggested this, I might dig into it again. (I worry this might just be shifting the pain towards another layer, though.)
