For most of my life, I used to think of anger as a personality flaw. That changed during the last year, when attending protests and listening to others made me wonder if my life has been rather anger-free also, to some extent, because it’s been a life of relative privilege.

And so, I want to be more angry, and I want to shape my anger to be useful (and not just to me) and constructive. I am also recognizing that my voice is heard in some places, and anger/candor can be the right thing to carry with that voice.

This is new and really uncomfortable to me, particularly as I’ve seen people corrupted by anger and frustration. Calibrating all this is likely to take the rest of my life.

I received thoughtful notes from some of you about my yesterday’s tweets, and I want to learn more. Who’s angry in a good way? What does it even *mean*? How are *you* angry? And if you see any examples or essays, please send them my way. I’ll append them to this thread.

One example that meant a lot:
@monteiro’s words that made me reflect a lot on Twitter’s spineless leadership (and leadership in general). This, to me, feels like anger put to good use: https://medium.com/@monteiro/jack-dorseys-resignation-letter-to-twitter-b04e8a63b0a9 …1 reply 1 retweet 7 likesShow this thread -
I also know that an anger expressed by an experienced designer / a white guy comes with a lot of responsibility, so I hope you feel comfortable telling me whenever I screw this up. (Which I will.) My DMs are open. (Also, I promise I’m not turning into Lewis Black any time soon.)

A counterexample to above would be offensive, deranged rants by Torvalds, causing damage to the entire industry by driving people out or away from it. (Plus his enablers who see it as a joke.)https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/22/intel_spectre_fix_linux/ …

Replying to @mwichary
Linus is a touchy subject for me. The canonical asshole genius, enabled by the industry (and popular culture) for far too long. Every time I see a shitty comment on GitHub or Stack Overflow I think of him and how undervalued empathy and compassion are in technology.
